Dear Parents:

From Meta-Moment (Go RULER!) skits and capstone project presentations by our middle school students to SMART goal-setting and fashion show final touches by our upper school students, we’ve enjoyed another week of great learning on our tropical campus.

But in two more weeks many of our 7th-12th grade students will be venturing off-campus for Mini-Gusto! This is an outstanding opportunity, coordinated by Ms. Nancy Thatcher, for students to explore their interests and passions, gain real-world experience, and develop greater self-awareness. Mini-Gusto, along with Orange-White-and Blue Day, is the highlight of many GHCDS graduates. As part of this year’s Mini-Gusto, we will be requiring all students to write daily journal entries reflecting on their experience. We will also require students to compose a one-page summary reflection afterwards, which we will compile into a booklet to showcase the range of experiences, activities, and learning during Mini-Gusto that we can share with others. This represents another step in living the first part of our mission: “Cultivate reflective, creative, and compassionate students who are critical thinkers…”

In the meantime, this Saturday is our Black & Gold Gala at Carambola. This fun event has historically accounted for approximately half of all fundraising dollars to GHCDS. We hope to see you there!

Kind regards,

Kari

Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood. By Lisa Damour. Ballantine Books, 2016. If you have a daughter—and especially a pre-teen or teenage daughter—run to get this book! This will help provide incredible perspective and a road map for what is almost inevitably a rocky, roller-coaster-like path ahead. Highly recommended.

Thank you Sara Lee Hayes

Clay artist Sara Lee Hayes began working with the fourth grade in art class, on their clay mural project. Today the students learned about clay and its properties, then had the opportunity to create a sample piece. Next week the first stage of the mural will begin.

This Week in Sports

GHCDS SPIRIT LOGO

Hi Panther Families!

Every field and court is full of action now that we have preseason soccer and softball underway, and basketball season is in it’s final weeks of regular season games.

Many of our athletes play multiple sports, which makes planning practices around all the the different schedules difficult.  It’s very important that we teach our athletes to communicate with their coaches when splitting practice time with more than one sport.  Often I receive emails from parents, which is nice, but the first line of communication should be between athlete and coach. These conversations build respect
and help avoid misunderstandings.
