Destination ImagiNation is an innovative program whose goal is to teach students how to be world-class innovators and critical thinkers. Companies such as 3M, IBM, Motorola, and ThinkFun support DI(Destination ImagiNation) because it encourages the kind of thinking that is essential in today’s world. Each year DI provides a number of “hands –on” and “minds-on” experiences that teach creativity, teamwork, and problem solving, as part of a five month global tournament, beginning at the classroom level, and culminating in May with the Global Tournament. This year’s tournament was held in Knoxville, Tennessee and the Virgin Islands were proudly represented by the first DI team, founded at Country Day School.
DI Programs do not have to be school run and are often parent run initiatives. First to sixth grade homeroom teachers and fourteen wonderful parent volunteers participated in a three day workshop Monday to Wednesday, presented by Emily Panasowich, a Destination Imagination trainer from Singapore. Participants learned about creativity and style, were introduced to the year-long Destination Imagination program, and involved their own children in fun problem solving activities. Parent volunteers will be running the program throughout the school year on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 3:00, which will provide collaborative planning time for Lower and Middle school teachers. The workshop provided a wonderful way for teachers and parents to jump start the school year! Thanks to all!
