Second grade had a magnificent time at Southgate Coastal Reserve with Olivia Walton, Environmental Educator at St. Croix Environmental Association. Students walked, explored, observed, and learned about local flora, fauna, and the unique biodiversity found at this fantastic location. Southgate Coastal Reserve is open to the public. I encourage you to visit and allow your student to tour you around while naming plants and animals they learned about, such as our endemic agave plant, fiddler crab, and calabash. Many thanks to Jeanne Garner and Frank Iubelt for chaperoning the field trip. The island is indeed our classroom.
