Hi Panther Families!
As we roll into our final week of Flag Football and Volleyball, we’re so excited for the possibility of the coolest Thursday EVER for Panthers! We know for sure that our JV Girls Volleyball Team is playing at home on Thursday for Championships. We know for sure our Middle School Boys Flag Football Team is playing at home on Thursday for Championships. However, if/WHEN our Middle School Girls Volleyball Teams wins playoffs (Tuesday), they too will play on Thursday at home! If/WHEN our Elementary Flag Football Team wins their playoff game(Tuesday), we will have four teams playing Championships on our campus, all on Thursday! Yes! We have a goal to have Championship Thursday, on our fields and our court, for all four teams!
In thinking about the success of all our teams, it’s important to acknowledge and thank our athletes for supporting their teammates and their coaches, especially during intense competition. Coaches may not be able to play every athlete in playoff and championship games, but every athlete should be proud that they contributed to the success of their squad. Every player on the field or court represents every Panther on the team while playing. It’s all about “We”, and that’s not always easy on an athlete that wants to think “Me”. We appreciate each player’s team spirit as we finish these seasons together.
Below our Panther sports news and details, please find a flyer for Storm Volleyball Tryouts, for girls born between January 2007 and December 2008. This is an outside league, island team. They have fantastic coaches that we love and trust! You will also find another great opportunity for your students to sail during Thanksgiving Break.
Elementary Girls Soccer-Our Lady Panthers tied Alfredo Andrews Elementary School in their first game, and are looking forward to their second game against Pearl B Larsen.
Flag Football-Our Middle School team won their playoff game against Pearl B Larsen 36-8! Next week’s Champs game has been moved to Thursday for Middle School. Our Elementary Panthers take on Alfredo Andrews for playoffs this week. If/WHEN we take that win, Champs on Thursday for Elementary, too! How fun would that be to have Elementary and Middle School playing in Championships on the same day?!
Volleyball-Our JV Boys were knocked out of playoffs by illness and a few unprepared athletes. That was unfortunate. Our Varsity boys lost a great fight in their playoff match with Complex. Our Middle School Girls will face Woodson on playoffs on Tuesday, while JV prepares for Champs on Thursday. If/WHEN Middle School wins on Tuesday, we’ll have both our girls teams (MS and JV) playing Championships in our gym on Thursday!
Track and Field-Training has shifted from Cross Country to Track and Field! Training days are staying the same.
High School Sailing– Congrats to all our sailors that competed in ACC’s and CofC’s last weekend!
Here’s the scoop from their coaches on their performances:
The GHCDS HS Sailing Team competed against the best high school sailors in the nation in two prestigious invitational regattas this past weekend, The College of Charleston Invitational and the Atlantic Coast Championship.
The College of Charleston Invitational(CofC) also served as the Caribbean qualifier for a berth in the District Qualifier for the HS National Championships. Competing at College of Charleston in A division were skipper Mathieu Dale/crew Lucy Klempen, in B division Skipper JJ Klempen/crew Carson Oakley, Coach Mack Bryan (CDS Alumni and All American Collegiate sailor). This 2 day event started on Saturday with 40 degree temperatures with a fluctuating 5-12 knot breeze out of the north and strong current playing a role tactically, with a hard push by sailors and Race Committee the fleet completed 14 races getting off the water at sunset. On Sunday, temperatures where only a few degrees warmer with light and shifty winds allowing only 4 races to be completed before the wind died. In this heavily competitive fleet our Panthers finish 4th in Division A and 6th in Division B for an overall finish of 5th out of an 18 boat fleet. Antilles School finished 2nd overall qualifying them for a berth in the District Qualifier for HS Nationals. Well done Panthers, we will get them next time!
Our GHCDS Panther Sailors competing at Atlantic Coast Championship (ACC) in Toms River, NJ had a very challenging regatta, arriving late Friday night (thanks to airlines delays) to freezing temperatures and light and shifty winds. Saturday high temps in the 30s, these Crucian sailors put up a good fight against some of the best teams in the Nation. Saturday began early with the sailors removing ice from their boats. The winds were light and shifty causing a two hour postponement while the race committee waited for breeze and made course adjustments. Our Panther Sailors had great attitudes and fought hard all day completing 9 races, getting off the water just before sunset.
Sunday was slightly warmer but with gustier heavy winds, the kids had some great races. Again completing 9 races rounding out 18 races for the regatta. Division A skipper Milo Miller/crew Brielle Schindler rotating with Lucia Bishop finished 15th and Division B Skipper Ariana Schwartz and Elyssa Franklin finish 20th for an overall finish of 18th out of 20 boat fleet. Our young Panther Sailors, who sailed mostly against upperclassmen, sailed well in some extremely difficult conditions never giving up and displaying great sportsmanship in true Panther spirit! Thanks to Tim Franklin who chaperoned our ACC team.
