Around Campus

All Around Awesome Alum

GHCDS alum Julissa Moolenaar (class of 2016) visited my English classes on Tuesday, January 8th to perform some of her original slam poetry and to speak to students about her involvement with Spoken Word art and culture in Boston, where she attends Wheelock College.  Julissa performs regularly at clubs and venues all over Boston and in Slam Poetry competitions nation-wide and has been the recipient of several significant poetry performance awards and numerous accolades. Students were spellbound by Julissa’s performance of original favorites and such as “Buccaneer”and “Tropical Depression” which seemed to really resonate with them.  In follow-up thank you notes to Julissa students gushed, waxing eloquent and enthusiastic and making it clear that they were inspired, impressed and grateful for Julissa’s visit.  After returning to Boston, Julissa wrote the following to me: “It was such a pleasure to come back to GHCDS and share the things that I’ve learned while I’ve been in Boston. Without GHCDS I don’t think that I’d have the love for poetry that I do today and I truly hope I ignited a passion for poetry in the students that I was able to speak to.” I am hoping to make this an annual event.

Mathieu Dale Leads in ISV Laser Qualifiers

Four Virgin Islands Laser sailors; Mateo DiBlasi and Julian van den Driessche from St Thomas and Atlee Kohl and Mathieu Dale from St Croix are training and competing hard for the honor of representing the ISV in several world class Laser Championships this Summer.  After completing two of the three qualifiers, (Orange Bowl Regatta and Laser Radial Nationals), Mathieu Dale leads with the lowest ISV score.  These qualifiers are very competitive, attracting the best world class sailors, most of the top 15% have podiumed in world championships and are on active Olympic campaigns, the ISV’s strong performance is a testament to our junior sailing programs and year round access to training.
