GHCDS Participates in CHANT Youth Art Month Exhibit
May 22, 2023

On Monday, May 15th, the 8th grade class gathered in the library to learn about life in high school, both academically and socially, to ask questions, and enjoy a pizza lunch together.  Highlights of the meeting were:

  • discussion about grading in high school, particularly the shift from standards-based grading to percentage/letter grades
  • graduation requirements (both credit amount and coursework)
  • a look at prospective courses in high school, including Cambridge International classes
  • course introductions to English (Mr. Canning), Spanish (Sra. Capriola) and Executive Function Skills (Ms. Velez-Wyche)
  • club and organization leaders spoke about the opportunities for involvement in high school
  • first-hand advice from current 9th graders about the transition
  • a general discussion about increased responsibility, setting themselves up for success (study-buddies; establishing relationships with teachers; proper use of academic time; time management, etc.) and exploring all the options available to them to enhance their education and plan ahead for college

The students were engaged, asked pertinent questions, and seemed pretty confident that high school is going to be great!
