This Week in Sports

Hi Panther Families!

Our school was full of competition and fun this week! Our fields are packed for Flag Football on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and our gym brings a great crowd every day with volleyball! Throw in Cross Country training & racing at UVI and all our other practices, and you’ve got and super active Panther life! We hope you caught some of the action.

We will have sign-ups for Elementary Girls Soccer from Monday-Wednesday this week. The sheet will be posted on the bulletin board next to the PE Snack Bar. Girls in grades 4-6 may sign up. Please note we will only be fielding one team for girls, which means we may need to have tryouts. Those that don’t make the competitive team will still be allowed to train, however! We don’t know what days games will be held, but we’ll share that and practice information in next Friday’s Weekly News.

Flag Football-Another fantastic Panther win this week! Elementary rolled over Arthur Richards 28-6! Middle School has time to practice before their next game, which should give them time to nail down some plays for offense. The majority of players have turned in participation fees (only 10 more needed!). Fees are $25.00 and can be submitted in the office.

Volleyball-Middle School girls took the win over Free Will this week! Coach Helena reports that our girls not only showed individual improvements, but took great strides in team play. Our JV girls …Our JV Boys…! Varsity Boys took a resounding win over St. Joseph’s team, but took a loss to Complex in a five set, fight to the finish match. Our Varsity Girls had one hard match against Central, with a loss in three sets. This Thursday (10/17) Varsity will begin tournament play at Central. Parents should plan for matches on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and possibly Sunday. Reminder-participation fees for Middle School and JV Volleyball are $35.00 and Varsity are $45. Many have already paid, but we still have a few to collect. Thanks for handling this!

Cross Country-Wow! We had some great races on Wednesday! A note from Coach Harper: “In their first meet on Wednesday at UVI the Panthers ran swiftly to several podium finishes. In the Elementary division, Safiya Prasad and Croix Benton-Huggins earned first place in the 1-mile race, while Aminah Prasad and Josh TeWinkle earned third. In the 2-mile JV race, Mikey Dizon-Bumann easily grabbed the gold; Mason Lambert and Rory Ramsdell (home school) were second; Jah Whyte and Candace Felix both finished third in their races. In the 5K Varsity division, Cooper Crowther took first place, while Kelsey Bhola and Josie Calhoon were second and third, respectively, in the girls’ division. The school spirit and parent support are worth mentioning. Come cheer us on Wednesday, Oct 16, at the UVI Campus and witness the hard work we’ve been putting forth.” We expect races to start in a more timely manner, and to see better handling of the starting line and finish line. Running an event of that size requires a lot of volunteer time. Thanks for being patient while SCIAA irons out some big wrinkles!

High School Sailing-The GHCDS HS Sailing Team competed in Hollywood, FL in the SAISA first South Points Regatta of the 2019/2020 Season. GHCDS had teams competing in both Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions. The venue was challenging with light and shifty winds, changing currents and moored boats obstructing the race course, in true Panther spirit our team rose to the occasion. This was the first HS sailing regatta most of our very young team has ever competed in, our team comprised of mostly freshman and sophomores held their own in both Varsity and JV divisions. Our Varsity A team (skipper Milo Miller/ crew Lucy Klempen) having the only freshman skipper and our Varsity B team(skipper JJ Klempen/crew Carson Oakley) having the top finishing freshman skipper, and a bullet in the second race. Varsity finished 11 overall out of 25 Varsity teams! Our JV Team with A team skipper Lucia Bishop/ crew Brielle Schindler and JV B team skipper Ariana Schwartz/ crew Elyssa Franklin performed well with some great races. JV finished 10 overall out of a 16 boat fleet. Our team was complemented by organizers and other team leaders on our teams politeness, helpfulness and good sportsmanship well done Panthers! GHCDS Sailing team’s next event will be in Jensen Beach FL on October 19. Go Panthers!
