Community Service is a great way for students to embody our school’s golden thread, “The Island is our Classroom, The world is our Responsibility.” This year community service is not mandatory but we are encouraging our students to volunteer and earn some community service. Grade 9-12 students and families interested in earning off-campus community service should check this LIVING DOCUMENT for island wide opportunities. The Midre Cummings Park in Frederiksted is undergoing major renovations starting November 12th and its grand opening will be on November 20th. Sign-ups and further information will be released next week for how students and families can volunteer.

Reading Workshop has taken off! At the beginning of the week, we walked around campus and looked for environmental print. We learned that readers don’t just see things, they read things! We discovered signs that told us where something is and we found signs that told us the name of a place (office, library, etc.). In the classroom we ‘labeled’ different parts of the room. During this Unit we will read learn-about-the world (non-fiction) books and story books. We are starting with non-fiction. The class learned that they can learn a lot from pictures in a book and that an important part of becoming good readers, is to become really good storytellers.
The GHCDS varsity sailing team competed in their first regatta of the season, South Points #1, held at Virginia Key in Miami, Florida. Sailing in breezy conditions the A team (skipper Milo Miller and crew Brielle Schindler) and B team (skippers Alex Tonin and Ariana Schwartz and crew Elyssa Franklin and Miles Timmons) sailed to a 12th place combined score finish! Go Panthers!
Chemistry students Izzy Rodriquez and Patrick Sullivan are practicing measurement techniques to determine the density of water.
The Spanish 3, 4 and 5 students worked to create this Collaborative Poster Inspired by the painting “El Cargador de Flores” from the Mexican artist Diego Rivera.
The students in Spanish 2 classes spent time learning about and about presenting inspirational Hispanic personalities.
Singing was also a part of the celebration! The Spanish 3 class learned the lyrics to the song “Un año” by the Colombian artist Sebastian Yatra.
