“It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.” (Mahatma Gandhi)
Dear parents, alumni, and friends of GHCDS,

I’d like to say thank you for all of your good wishes and prayers for my successful knee surgery this past Monday. It went well. When I went into the operating room, the nurse put the oxygen mask over my face, and I said, “I’m feeling kind of funny….” Then I mumbled, “When are we going to start?” The nurse laughed and said, “We’re finished.”  I feel great, and I’m just a few weeks away from getting back to playing bad tennis with good friends.

Thanks to all of the Upper School parents who attended yesterday’s Parent Information Afternoon. I trust that it was informative and that you had a chance to meet the teachers. Please remember, if you ever have a concern or question regarding any of your child’s classes, don’t hesitate to contact the teacher.

Parents in class

Parents walk in their children’s footsteps.

There was a mistake on our Website Calendar that I would like to correct:

  1. The 7th and 8th grades Parent Information Afternoon is on Friday, September 19th, from 3:30 – 5:30 P.M.
  2. The Nursery to 6th grades Parent Information Afternoon is on Friday, October 3rd, from 3:30 to 5:30 P.M

Thanks to Marcia Taylor, Marine Advisory from UVI, for her presentation to encouraging Middle School students to become involved in the Coastal Week Clean Up which will take place on September 20th at Columbus Landing from 9: 00 am to 11:00 am.

coast weeks clean up

Ms. Taylor inspires the students to be stewards of our environment.

Channel 12 was chosen as one of 10 stations nationwide to collect footage of children engaged in outdoor activities.  The footage will be gathered, then sent to the Boston station, where they are making a new show for kids called Plum Landing. If kids are to be filmed, the TV station needs a release (attached). Ms. Coles will be supervisor the GHCDS efforts at Columbus Landing. She would like any child in grade 6 or under to come with an adult. People should bring their own water bottles and gloves and hats.

Parents who are interested in volunteering for the Destination Imagination Workshop are invited to participate in tomorrow’s DI Workshop from 10:00 A.M. to Noon. DI for 1st to 3rd grade students is held on Tuesdays, while 4th to 6th grade students will have DI on Thursdays.

Next week is School Picture Week. An email has been sent out with the days and times that your child’s class will have their pictures taken.  On Monday the nursery, pre-K, Kindergarten, grade 1 and grade 2 classes will be flashing their beautiful smiles for the camera.

Schedule

Thanks to teachers and parents who have volunteered to offer Lower School Activities to begin the week of September 22nd.  We have a lovely selection.  Some activities filled very quickly, and most were full well before the September 10th deadline.   Quadrille and Martial Arts were cancelled due to a lack of interest.   Confirmation slips will go home today with the children.    You may pay for the activities in the office during the week of September 15th.   Please make sure that payment is accompanied with the confirmation slip so that Ms. Hutchins can keep track of payment.   The location for each activity will be posted in classrooms as well as in the bulletin.

Congratulations to Alumni Class of 2008 Coast Guard Lieutenant Junior Grade Rebekah Seifer who recently completed Aviation Training at the U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Training Center in Mobile, Ala. Rebekah is one of only two Virgin Islands women to have completed U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Training. She has been assigned to the Miami Coast Guard Air Station. Well done, Rebekah!

Calcutta Poster - Save the Date

It feels like summer just flew past us!  In the interest of giving everyone a little more time to get back into the swing of things, we are postponing the 2nd Annual GHCDS Calcutta Tennis Tournament until November 12th-16th.  Our goal is to give as many people the opportunity to participate as possible.
