The Weekly News: October 3
October 3, 2014“The future is called “perhaps,” which is the only possible thing to call the future. And the only important thing is not to allow that to scare you.” (Tennessee Williams)
Dear parents, alumni, and friends of GHCDS,
I want to start this week’s NEWS by thanking Mrs. Pam Peacock for volunteering all her time filling in for Ms. Nieves in the office. Ms. Nieves travelled to the States to visit her mother who had recently been hospitalized, and Pam came to our rescue, as she so often does. Thank you, Pam.
What a wonderful party we had last Saturday at the Diageo Visitors Center. Thanks to the Parents’ Association for organizing the event. The theme was “The 80s”, and so many people dressed the part. At times it was hard to see to the other side of the dance floor because of all the “big hair” on both the women and the men. Our DJ, Alex Elizee had everyone hopping to the beats of the decade. It was so much fun. Thanks to everyone for coming.
The Parents’ Association has also launched our Innisbrook Fundraiser. Please support us by shopping early for the holidays! The GHCDS Innisbrook Wraps Fall Fundraiser will run until October 14th. Click on the attached PDF for more information. Parent Letter – Innisbrook Fundraiser

Thanks so much to all.
Congratulations to several Panthers who took part in Sunday’s September Surprise Triathlon in Frederiksted. Alec and Nati Kuipers were the overall winners of the Try-a-Tri distance. Dominic Pugliese was the second place male finisher. Middle School math teacher, Ms. Klein, was the first place female finisher and second overall in the sprint distance. Matthew Mays had a stellar swim and lead his speedy teammates, Jacob Borden and Jonathan Thomas, to a third place finish in the relay division. A big thanks goes to Ms. Nicole Hutchins and Maya Russell for helping with the timekeeping for the event.
First to Eighth grade students are now meeting for a weekly assembly on Fridays at 7:50. From now on all 1st to 8th graders will meet weekly, with a different class running each meeting. This Friday Ms. Beach’s advisory ran the meeting, the focus of which was the school song writing competition. Each class will compose a song, due Oct 17th. The Middle School Council will select the top three, and on October 21st grades 1 to 8 will vote on the winning song or lyrics. The winning class will have an ice cream party. Mrs. Thompson will help to compose music for the song. We will end each gathering singing a birthday song to those students whose birthdays fall within that week.
On Sunday, September 28th, from noon to 5:00 P.M., the St. Croix Women’s Coalition is having a Family Fun in the Sun Barbecue at the Frederiksted pool. There will be great music, a 50/50 draw, games, sandcastle building contests and very tasty food. The Coalition is a vital organization in the community, and they could use your support. Tickets can be purchased at the GHCDS office.
As part of World Food Day, the 4H Youth Super Chef Competition is a signature event held each year. Teams of three students under the guidance of a coach prepare and cook a dinner that features three ingredients. This year the ingredients include beef, eggplant, and passion fruit. The first rounds of competition take place on October 11th and 13th. The final round takes place on October 19th. Special thanks to Rebecca Plourde who has agreed to be the coach for this year’s super chef competition. Registration must be turned in on October 3rd.
The Athletic Department is about to begin Volleyball and Cross Country seasons. Game and meet schedules are posted on our website under Athletics. Flag Football schedules for Elementary and Middle School are expected soon. Our sailors are focused and preparing for their season. Special thanks to all our coaches for getting our Panthers ready to represent! https://ghcds.org/athletics/
Next Friday (October 3rd) is Lower School Parent Information Afternoon. Parents will meet in the pavilion at 3:30 pm. Mr. Sinfield and Ms. Marohn will address parents. At 3:45 pm parents will be directed to their children’s classroom. Parents of first through fourth grade will collect their children at the playground and proceed to their children’s classroom. Parents of fifth and sixth grade students will proceed to the classrooms without their children, who will play happily while the teachers chat with parents. Thanks to room parents who are organizing refreshments.
Destination Imagination Upper School students are available to babysit on Parent Information Afternoon. Parents can leave their little ones with the DI team in the primary library before going up to the pavilion to meet with Mr. Sinfield. The suggested donation is 5.00 per child. Donations will contribute to the team’s trip to attend the international competition in the spring.

Before I sign off I am compelled to mention how grateful I am for all the volunteer hours that so many parents gift to GHCDS. Every day, including the weekends, parents are at the school helping with any number of programs, projects, and events. Your dedication to the school is truly appreciated.
I think that’s it for now but to wish you a great weekend.
Warmly,
Bill
