Our 5th graders had an exciting field trip to The Nature Conservancy, where they toured the Coral Innovation Hub, a coral restoration facility. During the visit, students learned about the essential science of coral restoration happening in the lab and the coral nursery tanks, gaining hands-on knowledge about coral ecosystems and their importance to St. Croix.
The highlight of the trip was a live demonstration of coral fragmentation, where students saw firsthand the specialized techniques and specifications required for “fragging” coral. It was an unforgettable learning experience that deepened their understanding of marine conservation and the crucial role coral reefs play in our environment.
