Middle School Humanities: Cultivating Holistic Learners

Humanities

Embarking on an enriching educational journey, Middle School students at Good Hope Country Day School delve into a comprehensive curriculum designed to shape not just their academic prowess but their holistic development. This program encompasses seven core subjects, including English, History, Mathematics, and Science. Moreover, students are granted the freedom to choose two electives from an array of options, fostering a well-rounded educational experience that extends beyond traditional boundaries.

English Adventures in Middle School:

In Middle School English classes, students actively participate in the Lower Secondary Cambridge Program, an experience that goes beyond refining writing skills. The focus is on fostering a deep connection with literature and language, embracing novels, poetry, short stories, and plays. This literary journey not only hones writing abilities but also nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the power of words.

Historical Perspectives in Middle School:

History classes in Middle School provide a unique perspective by integrating historical skills, research, geography, and critical thinking against the backdrop of American history over two years. This holistic approach equips students with more than historical knowledge; it cultivates skills to navigate complex source materials, ask insightful questions, and engage in meaningful discussions. The aim is to foster a well-rounded understanding of the past, connecting it to the present and shaping informed global citizens.

Spanish Language Excellence:

The GHCDS Spanish Language Program in Middle School is not merely about language acquisition; it's a cultural exploration. Starting with Spanish 1A and 1B in 7th and 8th grade, students set the stage for future success in Spanish 2 in Upper School. The program places a strong emphasis on developing speaking and literacy skills in Spanish, fostering cultural understanding, and encouraging expression. This holistic approach enriches students' perspectives, promoting not only language proficiency but also global awareness and cultural sensitivity.

Cultivating well-rounded learners, GHCDS ensures that education goes beyond the classroom, nurturing students intellectually, emotionally, and socially. The Middle School Humanities program stands as a testament to the school's commitment to providing a realistic, enriching, and comprehensive educational experience for every student.
