Cooking Up Culture: 6th Graders Explore Okra with Chef Nico Cherubin

This week, Chef and GHCDS parent Nico Cherubin joined the 6th Grade to help bring their Ag Fair project to life—one delicious dish at a time! As part of their research on the versatile vegetable okra, students rolled up their sleeves to prepare Funji, a beloved island staple.

Throughout the cooking process, students actively participated in every step, from prepping ingredients to stirring the pot, while sharing fun facts they discovered about okra. To complete the meal, Chef Nico prepared Callaloo and a fresh brown sauce, perfectly complementing the Funji.

Even students who were new to Funji—or hesitant about okra’s reputation for being slimy—were pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed the dishes. A big thank you to Chef Nico for sharing his time, expertise, and passion for Caribbean cuisine with our young chefs!
