Dancing Through History: Grades 4–6 Celebrate VI Heritage!

In celebration of Virgin Islands History Month, our Grades 4–6 students stepped back in time with an engaging lesson on two iconic cultural traditions: Quadrille dance and Quelbe music!

Students began with a brief history lesson, learning that:

  • Quadrille is a traditional folk dance that originated in Europe and was adopted and adapted in the Caribbean—today it’s a vibrant symbol of Virgin Islands culture.
  • Quelbe, the official music of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is a lively blend of African, European, and Caribbean influences. It often features instruments like the banjo, squash (a percussive gourd), and flute, and lyrics that tell stories of island life.

After learning about the roots and rhythm of these traditions, students got on their feet to learn basic Quadrille steps, practicing with a partner and dancing along to joyful Quelbe beats.

They showed great enthusiasm, teamwork, and rhythm—a fantastic first try and a beautiful way to honor local heritage through music and movement!
