The GHCDS Panther Sailing Team traveled to Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina to compete in the 2025 Azalea Bowl Regatta—an elite event that brings together both high school and college fleets, offering high school sailors an exciting opportunity to race in a more competitive and challenging environment.
Representing GHCDS were two talented Panther teams:
-
Division A: Ian Ainger & Serena Sheraw
-
Division B: AJ Mauro & Max Dale
With over 40 boats competing in the Banks Channel, the racing was lively and spectator-friendly.
Saturday brought near-perfect sailing conditions with a steady 12–14 mph southeasterly breeze and light chop. Races began on schedule, and with each third race finishing upwind, efficient rotations from the Carolina Yacht Club docks kept things running smoothly. A strong morning current added a layer of complexity to strategic decisions early in the day.
As the afternoon progressed, winds increased into the upper teens, and the switching current made the racecourse even more challenging. Despite the conditions, the Panthers remained focused and determined. The regatta ran a one-and-one rotation through seven races per division, with races averaging 17 minutes each.
After a full day on the water, sailors gathered for the Azalea Bowl Dinner and College Information Night, where students had the chance to connect with college sailing programs and explore future opportunities in the sport.
We are proud to share that the Panthers finished in 7th place overall—a fantastic showing against a highly competitive fleet. Congratulations to Ian, Serena, AJ, and Max on their performance and sportsmanship on the water!
Go Panthers!
